“ Taking inspiration from the myth of Narcissus, Infems artist Rebecca Fontaine-Wolf reimagines one of art history’s most iconic depictions of the doomed love affair between (wo)man and (her)his own reflection. She continues to investigate her concerns around the mediated relationship to the body and self-image as experienced in contemporary digitised culture where self-objectification has become a norm for most people.

In this work the pond is replaced by broken mirrors, whose silvery shards reflect a fragmented, distorted view of its subject. Is this shattering a breaking free of the constraints of the subject's life; of the expectations placed on her by society and culture? Is it a loss of her own identity within the myriad possible ‘images’ she could choose to see? Or a comment on how women are expected to be beautiful whilst at the same time being accused of Vanity?

However, just as the reflection can seduce us to get lost in the idealised visions of ourselves, it is also necessary for self-knowledge. To reflect is to understand, after all.

Fruits and flies, mirrors and veils, the lipstick and the Stiletto, Fontaine-Wolf mixes vanitas symbols old and new to create a modern day Memento Mori; a reminder of the beauty and precariousness of the present moment. A reminder to own your moment and enjoy the here and now before it fades away into darkness.”
